A few weeks ago many of us were rocked by the leak of the draft SCOTUS opinion overturning Roe v. Wade. While the decision is not final until it comes out, it is the decision many of us have feared for a long time. Anti-choice activists have been working towards this for years - towards a time when individuals no longer had reproductive autonomy.
Fortunately, Maryland has a strong history of protecting reproductive rights: we codified Roe v. Wade by ballot referendum in 1992, and last session the General Assembly passed the Abortion Care Access Act, ensuring that women are able to access abortion care near their home with providers they know and trust.
But many of our pro-choice legislators are in close races against anti-choice opponents.
We need to stand up for Marylanders’ right to choose and defend our pro-choice majority in the legislature. That’s why I’m proud to announce StandUp MD.
StandUp MD is a pro-choice mobilization program that will train passionate students leaders in core campaign skills. They will participate in the educational component of @raskin.jamie’s renowned Democracy Summer fellowship program, plus exclusive StandUp courses. These students will volunteer for campaigns across the state in the 2022 primary and general elections to secure our pro-choice majority in the Maryland General Assembly.
Students, apply by 11:59pm on June 6th to become part of our inaugural StandUp cohort
